Welcome to Koa’e Outrigger Canoe Club
Who We Are
Koa’e Outrigger Canoe Club is a recreational paddling club, made up of a diverse group of people. Some of us paddle every day and some just a few times a month. Some members also belong to other Maui canoe clubs and compete in sprint and/or long distance races. We have a wide range of ages, abilities, and interests and strive to be inclusive.
Our goal as a club is to make outrigger paddling accessible to everyone and to promote physical and mental fitness. The ocean is medicine.
How Can I Get In On It?
Every Koa’e Outrigger Canoe Club member is asked to donate $100 per year to the Kimokeo Foundation. This gives us access to the canoes and the space at Kalepolepo Fishpond.
We are 100% volunteer organization.
Any additional donations are used to help pay our operating expenses, including liability insurance, website hosting, and canoe maintenance. Donations to cover operating expenses are greatly appreciated but not required.
There are also volunteer opportunities available:
Canoe maintenance
Help maintain Kalepolepo Fishpond wall
Native plant propagation and planting to restore adjacent coastal area
Na Keiki O Ke Kai Kid’s Camp
What We Offer…
Recreational Paddle
7:00 am - 8:30 am Monday thru Saturday
We paddle from the Kalepolepo Fishpond in Kihei. We are not a racing club, but we do manage to get a good workout and move the canoe at a good pace. We focus on fitness and trying to find the right blend, working together rather than seeing who can paddle hardest.
We take a few breaks to enjoy the water and natural beauty of Maui, talk story, and build community.
Na Koa’e Men’s Mental Health Peer Support Group Paddle
The Koa’e Kea (white-tailed tropicbird) flies hundreds of miles from land, in search of food, but always returns to land. Lost voyagers who spot these birds see them as a sign of hope. We are never really lost; sometimes we just forget that we are a part of the natural world.
This group welcomes any kane who are battling with mental health challenges. We have created a safe, non-judgmental space where there’s room for honesty and openness. The ocean gives us the space to say things out loud.
Often depression, PTSD, anxiety, brain injury, and other mental health issues lead to isolation and loneliness. Physical exercise and having the support of other people who really understand can make a big difference in life quality. Men who are physically, mentally, and emotionally supported make stronger families and communities.
7:00 am - 8:30 am Sunday
